IBB University: Inter-Faculty Games Finals Holds Saturday

According to a press statement released by the Sports Officer of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai, Mallam BM Dzukogi, the 2016 Inter-faculty Games that began on 13th July, 2016 is slated to end today, Saturday 23rd July, 2016 by 3pm at the University’s sports complex.

The statement disclosed that, the 2016 inter-faculty games is the 3rd edition since the establishment of the university in 2005. The first was held in 2008 while the second in 2011, respectively. It added that, the University sports programmes are national and international sporting events thereby making the competition a traditional sporting activity of universities for the selection of student-athletes that will represent the university at Nigerian University Games Association (NUGA), Federation of International Students Union (FISU) and West African Universities Games (WAUG) as well as other national competitions.

The statement further noted that, Sports in IBBUL, since the assumption of Prof Maiturare, has gained frequency and momentum with the VC leading trainings every evening. This new energy in IBBUL sports programmes has recently seen the university young Taekwondo team competing in an intercollegiate championships at Obafemi Awolowo University from 13th- 17th July, 2016.

In the same vein, the Wednesday games have been observed diligently by students and many enthusiastic staff while clarifying that, the difference between inter-departmental games and the inter-faculty games is that, the inter-departmental games is organized by the SUG while the Inter-faculty games is organized by the university through the sports office.

It added that, this year’s inter-faculty games will be used to select the university teams in Judo, Taekwondo, Tennis, Table Tennis, volleyball, basketball, football, badminton while noting that, so far, matches have been completed in judo, taekwondo, table tennis.

The finals of volleyball, basketball, football and badminton will take place on Saturday from 2pm then followed by taekwondo demonstration and award of medals and overall trophy by the VC. Every 1st, 2nd, 3rd positions in games competed will receive medals and certificate of participation.

The NUGA zonal qualifiers will take place in September 2016 will the main NUGA comes up at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi in October 2016.

The University’s Sports Officer hinted THE CAMPUS DIARIST that, IBBUL ATHLETIC OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP will come up in the early part of 1st semester in the next academic session to enable them select athletes for NUGA 2016 while adding that, there would be open championships in tennis, table tennis, judo, taekwondo, chess, scrabbles etc upon resumption in 1st semester. In his words “We shall use the tenure of this VC to maximize the promotion of sports on campus. Our target now is to have him construct a big gym like the one in COE Minna where about five sports can take place: basketball, volleyball, badminton, judo, taekwondo and table tennis” he stressed.

Asked how points are awarded, he said, points shall be awarded to faculties in each game in the following order;

• 1st position - 6 points
• 2nd position - 5 points
• 3rd position - 4 points
• 4th position - 3 points
• 5th position - 2 points
• 6th position - 1 point
In individual sports, a faculty can acquire more than the maximum points where two of her players fall within 1 -6 positions then the faculty with the highest points in all the games would be declared the overall-winner at the end of the competition.

The IBBUL 2016 Inter-faculty Games finals according to the statement comes up in the following order;

2.00pm - Volleyball
3.00pm - Basketball
4.00pm - Football/Taekwondo demonstration at half time

5.30pm - Award Ceremony.
