Wayne Rooney Rated Doubtful For England's Estonia Clash

Wayne Rooney remains an injury doubt for England’s final home European Qualifier with Estonia on Friday – but will still receive his golden boot even if he does not play at Wembley.

The Manchester United striker was one of three players – along with Danny Ings and Jonjo Shelvey – who failed to train with Roy Hodgson’s squad on Monday.

As well as sitting out that closed session, he missed Tuesday’s first open session, with Ings and Shelvey also absent once again.

Rooney picked up a knock to his ankle during the 3-0 defeat at Arsenal on Sunday and may well be rested in any case even if he recovers in time for the game.

With England’s place at next summer’s finals in France already secured, there is no urgent need for Hodgson to field his strongest team.

In that respect, Rooney could be held back for the final preliminary game in Lithuania next week instead.

Whatever happens, he will receive a golden boot from Sir Bobby Charlton to mark breaking the England scoring record after reaching 50 goals for his country.

Hodgson has already lost John Stones from his pool because of a medial ligament injury and called Kyle Walker and Andros Townsend in as additions to his original selection.
