Jonathan To Host Falconets, Paralympic Team On Saturday
ABUJA, September 12, (THEWILL) - President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan will host both the country’s team to the London 2012 Paralympic Games and the Super Falconets team to the Japan 2012 U-20 World Cup, to a special reception at the Banquet Hall of the State House Villa in Abuja, on Saturday.
According to Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mr. Labaran Maku, the president is hosting the reception in appreciation of the efforts of the teams in bringing glory to the country.
“The entire Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be on hand to also support the president in receiving members of the Falconets team, whom he described as ‘scintillating performers and number two in Africa and did well on the global pitch defeating the best in the world.’” Maku said while speaking with State House correspondents on Tuesday. “Their performance wiped away our tears on the lacklustre performance of the able-bodied Nigerians.”
He commended the passion exhibited by the Paralympic team, saying their achievement is an indication that “no matter your physical challenge, you can give your country lots of honour.”
The Paralympic team became the darling of Nigerians after following up a woeful performance of the Olympic contingent with a heart-warming show at the Paralympics, winning six gold, five silver and two bronze medals to place third in Africa and 22nd overall (of a total 164 competing countries) at the Paralympics.
Similarly, the female Under-20 dusted aside the recent spineless performance of the country’s male soccer teams to finish 4th at the world championship, losing to eventual winners, USA, in the semi-final, and hosts, Japan in the third-place play-offs.
