Nollywood Actor Jailed For Homosexual Act

A senior Magistrates' Court located at Karu, a suburb of Abuja, Nigeria's capital, has sentenced a 28-year old Nollywood actor, Bestwood Chukwuemeka, to three-month imprisonment for having sex with another man through the anus after he pleaded guilty to the charge.

 
The actor said he committed the act under the influence of alcohol. He pleaded with the court to have mercy on him.

 
While handing down the sentence which came without an option of fine, the Senior Magistrate, Nafisatu Buba, said it would serve as a warning to other youths who hide under the influence of alcohol to commit crimes.

 
The police prosecutor, Mohammed Umar, had earlier told the court that the actor committed the offence in August this year arguing that the crime was contrary to Section 284 of the Penal Code. 

 
He also said since Chukwuemeka had finally pleaded guilty to the crime which he denied when he was first arraigned, the court should try him summarily.

During his initial arraignment before the court in September, Mr. Chukwuemeka pleaded not guilty. His argument was that he had thought the complainant, who he met on his bed was his girl-friend adding: "I started romancing her." 

 
He said he was drunk that night after visiting some night clubs. 

 
Though granted bail then in the sum of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum, the Senior Magistrate had ruled that alcohol was not an excuse for the offence.

 
Recently, popular actor, John Okafor (Mr. Ibu) had raised alarm that the Nollywood industry had been infiltrated by homosexuals.

 
Also, the Senate had in November last year banned homosexual acts in the country through the Same Sex Marriage (prohibition) bill 2011, which stipulates 14-year imprisonment for convicted gays in Nigeria.
