HUMAN RIGHTS CALL: MELEZ ZENAWI’S DEATH: TASK BEFORE HAILLEMARIAM DESALEGN

A Human Rights Group: ROMKEEP: Rights of Man Keep, has called on the succeeding Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Mr. Haillemariam Desalegn, to as a matter of urgency, institute highly improved human rights. This Call is clearly necessitated by the ugly fact that the late Prime Minister Melez Zenawi soon after assuming office in 1991, followed the obnoxious path of his predecessor. Ethiopia has been caged in by human rights abuses: castration of opposition, imprisonment without fair hearing and castration of the press.

Whereas we do not celebrate the death of anybody, we unequivocally add that by the eventful death of Melez, Ethopia could be re-channeled to the path of greatness through liberalization of the human mind. Freedom of the press and human rights should be the watchword of Haillemariam.

Haillemariam should most definitely tinker with the autocratic constitution of Ethiopia as it is presently, and ensure respect of human rights. Most importantly, the New Constitution should ensure Five-Year Single Tenure for all political office holders to avoid sit-tightism which has paralyzed African development.
