BERLIN, Germany, July 18, 2012/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Following a telephone conversation with the chairman of the National Forces Alliance, Mahmoud Jibril, Federal Foreign Minister Westerwelle issued the following statement today:
“I congratulate the Libyan people on the successful conduct of their first democratic elections after decades of dictatorship. By casting their ballot, millions of voters have laid the foundations for the democratic rebirth of their country.

These elections were a defining moment for the new Libya. It is now a matter of drafting a constitution, building stable democratic structures and further improving the security situation. All political parties and civil society forces need to play their part in this process.

Germany is ready to contribute to that effort in order to make the rule of law, freedom, peace and domestic reconciliation as well as plurality and religious tolerance hallmarks of the new Libya.”
Mahmoud Jibril said he trusted that Libya's “strategic relationship with Germany” would be further enhanced, expressing the hope that Germany would play an active role in the reconstruction of his country.
