Lagos State House of Assembly has mandated the Attorney-General of the state to carry out a coroner's inquest into the death of one Oluwafemi Olayiwola, who was allegedly shot dead by a police officer.

At the plenary sessionĀ  yesterday, the Speaker of the House, Ikuforiji Adeyemi, said it had become necessary to ask the attorney-general to carry out an inquest and also ensure that the suspect is prosecuted.

Media reports confirmed the news of the murder of Olayiwola on December 5, 2010 and it was alleged that he was shot to death by the DPO of Olosan police station, Mr. Mohammed Babamale.

Ikuforiji, while lamenting what he described as the gruesome murder of Olayiwola, ordered the Commissioner of Police, Marvel Akpoyibo, to appear before the lawmakers and explain the reason for the incessant killing of innocent people by policemen.

His words: 'It is unfortunate that a man so young was cut down in his prime. When we got reports that Olayiwola was shot inside the premises of Onipanu Police Station, we were shocked. This death is most unfortunate but I assure the people of Shomolu where the deceased comes from, that we would do everything within our power to unravel the mystery behind the killing and I urge the commissioner of police to move swiftly and bring the accused to justice.'

Meanwhile, it was gathered that the suspect has been arrested and may soon face prosecution.
