EKITI EX-DEP SPEAKER CARPETS FAYEMI OVER UNAD TUITION FEE

By Lere Olayinka

Former Deputy Speaker of Ekiti State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Taiwo Olatunbosun has carpeted the State Governor, Mr. Kayode Fayemi for being economical with the truth on his much celebrated pegging of tuition fee in the State owned University of Ado-Ekiti (UNAD) to N50, 000, saying; “What Fayemi did actually amounted to increment in the school fee of the generality of the students.”

Olatunbosun, in a statement made available to journalists in Ado-Ekiti described the noise being made by the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) government in the State on the tuition fee as deceitful, urging Fayemi to “get sincere with governance because deceiving people with 419 ideas cannot work in Ekiti.”

The former deputy speaker, who was also the Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation under the Chief Olusegun Oni-led administration asked; “if pegging of tuition fee at N50,000 when only a little above 2,000 out of the over 20,000 students of UNAD are presently paying more than N40,000 is Fayemi's style of free education?”

He said; “It is known to Fayemi himself that what he has done with the UNAD school fee amounts to increment across board and by the time the students that are currently paying N32,500 are asked to start paying N49,500, the deceit will be open to all.

“I was a member of the immediate past Executive Council of the State and I knew as a fact that UNAD management had already been directed to review the fee being paid by the 100 level students downward. The Exco directive, which had been conveyed to the school management, was that increment of the tuition fee must not be more than 25 percent.

“The Oni-led administration did not make any noise about this Exco decision because implementation lies in the hands of UNAD management and we believed that government interference should not be encouraged in the running of the university, like it is done in other civilised climes.

“Therefore, Fayemi should face governance and stop governing Ekiti on the pages of newspapers because running a State like Ekiti successfully cannot be achieved through media hype.”
