AIG Mbu Joseph Mbu (retired)

Assistant Inspector General of Police AIG Mbu Joseph Mbu (retired) was born on April 10, 1958 to the family of Chief Simeon N. Mbu and Ara Agnes Mbu of Abia Etung village in Old Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State, in South South Nigeria.

He began his educational sojourn when he was enrolled into St. Francis Primary School, Abia, Etung L.G.A Cross River State at the age of eight. The young Joseph spent five years at St. Francis Primary School and graduated in 1971.

He proceeded to attend Government Secondary School, Ikom between 1973 and 1977. He later spent two years studying at the School of Arts and Science Uyo, Akwa Ibom State from 1978 till 1980. In the same year (1980) he gained admission to University of Lagos where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.sc Honours) in Political Science with Second Class Upper Division in 1983.

After his NYSC in 1984, he applied for and was recruited as a Cadet ASP.

He attended the Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police Course from December 31, 1984 to December 6, 1985 at the Police Staff College Jos.

Joseph Mbu became a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) at the Railway Police Division, Zaria in Kaduna State where he served for three years between 1988 and 1991.

He was DPO in five police divisions including;

Railway Police Division in Kafanchan Kaduna State from 1991 to 1992.

(1) Ukwa East, Akwete, 1992 - 1994.
(2) Isiala Ngwa South, Omoba. Abia State, 1994-1996

(3) Nnengere Police Division, Yobe State, 1997 - 1998

(4) Potiskum Police Division, Yobe State, 1998 - 1999.

He was appointed the Commander, Federal Highway Patrol in-charge of five Northern states of Borno, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi and Adamawa States during the initial banditry era between 1999 and 2000.

After his meritorious service, he was redeployed to command the Federal Highway Patrol in five South East/South South states of Cross River, Ebonyi, Abia, Akwa Ibom and Imo between 2000 and 2001.

As an Assistant Commissioner Of Police, he held the following positions:

(1) Area Commander Minna Metro Niger State
(2) Area Commander SULEJA Niger State
(3)Area Commander Delta Central, Ughelli DTS.
(4) Assistant Commissioner, Administration , State Headquarters , Awka, Anambra State, 2006 to 2008.

He held special appointments in various positions where he brought his expertise to bear, including;

Chairman, Federal Task Force on Petroleum in Niger State, from 2001 to 2003.

Chairman, Inspector General of Police Task Team on Monitoring and Implementation of Police Projects, 2009-2011.

Chairman Nigerian Police Hall of Fame Committee, Police ForceHeadquarters, Abuja2013.

He was the Chairman Enforcement Task Team on City Cleaning and Management of FCT between March and October 2014

Co-chairman, Inspector-General of Police Committee onCommunal Clashes from 2014 to 2015.

Awards
Best Area Commander in Delta State in the year 2005.

Best Commissioner of Police for excellent performance in Oyo State in 2013.

In November 2013, he received two awards at the Security Watch International Award for Best Crime Fighting Police Chieftain in Africa, held in Johannesburg,South Africa. There, the continent recognized him as the Most Outstanding Crime Bursting Police Chief in Africa, just as the Rivers State Police Command which he was heading at the time was selected as the Most Innovative Police Command in Nigeria.

He is a recipient of the Nigeria Police Medal of Courage.

In October 25th, 2014, Be-great Security and Intelligence Academy, Accra, Ghana gave him an Award forEthical Policing and Professionalism. This was at the Ghana Armed ForcesCommand and Staff College, Accra.

He was inducted into the Crime Reporters Association of Nigeria CRAN HALL OF FAME on the 5th of May 2015, for ensuring the Most Credible and Peaceful election ever witnessed in Lagos and Ogun States.

He was honored with an Award for Selfless Service to Humanity by the Rotary Club of Ignado, Lagos State, on the 5th of September 2015.

On the 25th of November 2015, Security Watch Africa in Houston, Texas USA awarded him for the Best Police Zonal Command in Nigeria, as well as the Golden Star Award for Urban Crime Control in West Africa.

He received the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) Integrity Award in March 4 2016, at the NAF Conference Centre, Abuja for his;

i. massive transformation of places of assignment.
ii. frugal management of lean resources.
iii. focused, courageous, and innovative leadership.

iv. crime bursting, discipline, and firm control of men under his command

v. incorruptibility.
This was the first PCRC award at the National Level in a period of 32 years.

On the 1st of August, 2021 he was graced with the Outstanding Leader and Elder Statesman Award by Standtall Africa Initiative.

He has facilitated the employment of indigenes of his locality into Federal establishments such as the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board JAMB, NNIC and the National Insurance CommissionNAICOM, amongst others.

He has ensured that over 280 CrossRiverians got into the Ministry of Police Affairs, with more than forty of them from his hometown.

AIG Mbu established a Police School at Akpabuyo and another at Ogoja Cross River State.

He also brought the Headquarters of three departments of the Police

Education Directorate to Calabar, when he was Commissioner in charge of Police Education Directorate.

He carried out and attracted a lot of infrastructure development in his hometown.

AIG Mbu is a pacesetter, an Honest and innovative Nigerian who is committed to making sure that his people get the best in whatever field they decide to venture in.

On the May 2, 2016 AIG MBU and 21 other AIGs were compulsorily and untimely retired by the regime of President Buhari. In the aftermath of his retirement, AIG MBU challenged the Police Service Commission (PSC) on their unlawful action. On 3 July, 2023, the National Industrial Court gave a favourable verdict to him. He was the only courageous one among other 21 dismissed AIGs who challenged the illegal retirement pronouncement and was vindicated by the Court.Congratulations on your birthday Sir!!!
