The American Human Rights Council (AHRC-USA) joined the Pakistani Women Association of Michigan (PWAM), Eid Al-Fitr celebration gala dinner, a festive family event that was held in Farmington Hills on April 22, 2023.

Over 550 men, women, and children attended the gala. Pakistani world-renowned singer, artist and musician, Ustad Rafaqat Ali Khan, who belongs to the musical family Shaam Chorasi was the special guest. Mr. Khan, from a musical family that has been performing for over five hundred years, presented a marvelous musical performance and kept the audience engaged and entertained.

The event was an occasion to highlight PWAM’s work throughout the year. For over a decade of tireless work, the PWAM rendered multiple services that include family services, counseling, and mental health support to the Muslim community at large. One unique and landmark program that the PWAM’s spearheaded was the Fatimah Jinnah Transitional House, a shelter that is dedicated to help and assist displaced women providing all the needed support for its residents. This women’s shelter is the first of its kind Muslim women's shelter in Michigan. The late Fatima Jinnah, known as Mader e-Millat, was the daughter of the founding father of Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.

“We pride ourselves as a team on helping the needy and homeless Muslim women from all over the world to transition to a stable life,” said Erum Hussain, President of PWAM. “Our goal is spread these services beyond Muslim women and accommodate women from all backgrounds regardless of their ethnic or religious backgrounds,” added Hussain.

AHRC was pleased to present the American Human Rights Council “Spirit of Humanity” award to PWAM in recognition and appreciation of the PWAM’s team, the women who dedicated their time and efforts to provide much-needed services to the community, women in particular. PWAM is commended for their vision and their ongoing compassionate work serving humanity.

"AHRC congratulates PWAM for another year of success," said Imad Hamad, AHRC Executive Director. “AHRC and PWAM share the core values of serving humanity by advancing human rights,” added Hamad. “Women’s rights are human rights and supporting women’s rights is at the core of AHRC’s mission,” concluded. Hamad.
