The Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) as called on the Federal Government to investigate those accused of diverting relief materials meant for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).

This advice was given by the President of the Association, Dr. Mike Ogirima, at a press conference held yesterday in Abuja, as part of its annual Physicians week for the year 2016.

"In view of Mr. President's determination to fight corruption, there is a need for the federal government to investigate and bring to book all those accused of diversion of relief materials meant for IDPs."

Dr. Ogirima said as part of the association's contribution to the fight of corruption, the executives of NMA has constituted a committee on IDPs and asked all state branches with IDP challenges to do same so as to address health challenges faced in the camps.

He also asked the Federal Government to extend it's anti-corruption crusade to all sectors of the economy, including the health sector.

"We call on the Federal Government to extend the anti-corruption crusade to all sectors of the economy as it was done in the judiciary arm of government."

"It is our belief that if this is extended to the health sector, the little resources available in the sector would be properly utilized to improve the affordability and accessibility of health care services to Nigerians passing through the economic recession."

He also said that challenges associated with the IDPs resulting from communal clashes, militancy, kidnapping and other criminal elements should be looked into.

He went ahead to commend the efforts taken by the Federal Ministry of Health in resolving the prolonged crises bedeviling the Federal Medical Center Owerri, and asked that all security agencies to be alert and act appropriately on individuals or groups who may want to deny the health care services to the people of Imo state.
