Nigeria is Not under Economic Recession Says Bishop Umunna

By GODDAY ODID

The Presiding Bishop of Bible Life Church Cathedral, Bishop Leonard Umunna recently addressed a press conference with some journalists in Lagos on the state of the nation and why Nigeria is not under economic recession.

Speaking with some journalists at his palatial office, Bishop Umunna stated clearly that Nigeria economic recession is for the poor not for the rich. If Nigerians are saying that things are very difficult, I laugh because economic recession started six years ago and the present manifestation of economic recession is due to polices somersault and blame games of the present government in power.

The clergy pointed out that everybody is crying on the high cost of food items in the market while the super rich still live on ostentatious lifestyles while their children schooled in foreign universities. Even though the present Minister of Finance, Mrs.Kemi Adesoun admitted that there is economic recession, only the poor experiencing the unrepentant hardship in the country.

Bishop Umunna also spoke on the move to sell national assets to recover from economic recession. It is sad that such suggestion might put Nigeria into another unabashed economic quagmire if not cautioned. All the national assets sold by previous governments, what have we gained till now? What the government should do now, to look into assets that are obsolete and rebuild new ones. If all government assets are privatized, then the citizens will bear the brunt. Only the rich will benefit from this economic largesse.

Speaking further, he said the way out of this economic situation is to tackle corruption objectively not on party sentiments, to build maintenance trust on government establishments, reviewing the Nigerian constitution, change Nigeria name and President Buhari should do the needful to reshuffle present cabinet to bring rightful hands into the leadership of the country.

However, Nigeria at 56, comparing the present situation now, our celebration will be meaningless but to us Christians, especially clergies, many have derailed from the call of God to pursue earthly wealth.

He concluded that the economic recession has really affected small businesses in Nigeria but President Buhari must unite the country with viable policies to fast-track infrastructural developments in the country, he added.
