Northern Elders Score Buhari High, Says “He Is Best Thing To Happen Since Independence”
Elder statesmen in the northern part of the country under the auspices of
the Consultative Assembly of the Concerned Northern Patriots (CACNP) have
commended President Buhari on his anti-corruption fight and his quest to
combat the spate of insecurity in the country.
In a communique signed by Alhaji Muhammadu Gwaska, a former acting
chairman of Federal Character Commission (FCC), the elders scored
President Buhari high, saying under him, the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) and other security agencies have been revitalized and
made more credible.
The communique reads in part, “Recall also that President Muhammadu Buhari
had pledged to eliminate corruption, provide security of life and property
of the citizenry throughout the country, as well as an undiluted resolve
to bring to an end the insurgency activities that had threatened the lives
and property of the people of the north east part of the country. You are
mindful also, of the President's determination to decisively tackle the
ailing economy to bring to life with the ultimate aim of creating jobs to
eliminate unemployment and poverty.”
He said many Nigerians no doubt expected the President to hit the ground
running upon assumption of office but it became clear that President
Buhari had underestimated the rot that he found on the ground on
assumption of office.
He said, “Contrary to his expectations, the President met a virtually
empty treasury and found an unprecedented level of corruption in the
political and bureaucratic system that was beyond his imagination. This
situation created some initial delays in his swift take off that was
noticed in the establishment of various structures of government.
“Today, it is fourteen months since President Buhari took over the mantle
of leadership of the federal republic of Nigeria. And government in the
areas of fighting corruption and economic management has greatly improved.
Nigerians are beginning to realize that Buhari's emergence is the best
thing that has happened to this country since independence.
“In the war against corruption, the Economic and Financial Crimes
Commission (EFCC) and other security agencies have been revitalized and
made more credible, and various cases of corruption are at various levels
of investigation or prosecution.”
Speaking on the issue of security, he said it is common knowledge that
Boko Haram has been degraded and dislodged in the various local
governments they had held in the north east. He said the sporadic bombings
that were experienced in parts of the north east and some parts of North
West and north central have stopped.
He said, “as patriots who would want to see development and harmony in
this country, we would implore president Buhari to continue to be the
listening president that he is and look into genuine complaints from
members of his party and Nigerians in general in order to discourage
infiltration of spoilers in the rank of his party and government”
