The governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano, Tuesday, stormed the historic Ogbaukwu Cave and Waterfall in Owerre-Ezukala in Orumba South Local Government Area of the state and promised to turn the site into a world class tourist destination.

Obiano who is the first governor since the creation of Anambra State to undertake a tour of the ancient tourism marvel was thoroughly impressed by the amazing artistry wrought by nature in the cave and assured the community that his government would do its utmost best to ensure that the site becomes a world class tourist centre with a 4-Star hotel, a shopping mall, a theme park and an access road that would open the centre up to the world.

The governor’s guided tour of the site revealed a set of caves and tunnels hewn out of rocks by nature, creating the impressions of an Amphitheatre, a royal court with a sitting arrangement that depicts hierarchy and some breath-taking murals on rocky walls.

A visitor to the site first descends what seems like a flight of stairs into the bowls of the earth where a rocky ante-room opens up to receive him. Behind the ante-room is a magnificent waterfall splashing down from a canopy of trees above onto a pool of gleaming water below and spraying a soothing chill on the surrounding.

“This is one of the best places I have visited in my entire life!” Governor Obiano declared after the tour. “This cave is reported to be over two million years old. But we shall soon do a carbon dating to establish its actual age. I am the first governor to visit this cave since the creation of Anambra State. We shall explore all possibilities under a public private partnership arrangement to ensure that this place is developed. Happily, the community has assured us of land to bring our plans to pass,” he further explained.

Offering more insights into the historic site, the tour guide, Sir Evans Ihesi who conducted Governor Obiano round the site explained that some tunnels stretched from the cave to neighbouring Oji River in Enugu State, pointing out that most of the tunnels still needed to be explored to determine how far they went.

Also speaking after the tour, the proprietor of Rojenny Tourist Village, Oba, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka lauded Governor Obiano’s commitment to ensuring that Anambra State joins the global tourism map.
