London, UK: Justina Mutale, African Woman of the Year and Founder & CEO of the Justina Mutale Foundation for Women’s Leadership will join the Deputy Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, Dr Josephine Ojiambo, and other high ranking African officials at a high-level Roundtable Meeting on “Empowering Women in Business in Africa”. The Roundtable Meeting will be held at the University of London’s Heythrop College in Kensington to mark the African Union’s 2016 Africa Day Celebrations on Wednesday 25th May 2016.

“Women are the guardians of the world and the economic empowerment of women in Africa is key to realising the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and to achieving a sustainable world”, says Justina Mutale.

The 24th African Union Summit declared 2016 as the Year of Women’s Empowerment and Development to promote work towards the goals of Africa’s Agenda 2063. In commemoration of the 2016 Africa Day, the Business Council for Africa will host the high-level, invitation-only Roundtable Meeting supported by FBN Bank to discuss female economic empowerment in Africa.

African women are becoming increasingly involved in leadership roles across the continent. Rwanda has the highest number of women parliamentarians worldwide, with females holding 64% of seats in the Lower House. However, an analysis of the top 200 businesses on the continent revealed that only 2.5% of the leading CEOs are women.

The Roundtable Meeting will be an opportunity for African senior figures to discuss the key challenges women are facing in advancing their careers in the public and private sector.

The Roundtable discussion will cover the following topics amongst others: Empowering women and improving working conditions for women in the supply chain; the challenges and barriers to entry in supporting women into senior management positions; ensuring the continued retention and development of women in the workplace; facilitating greater female participation in international trade and investment; and increasing solidarity and knowledge-sharing between international female business leaders.

The Roundtable Meeting will be followed by the African Union’s 2016 African Day Reception, which will be hosted by the Dean of the African Union Heads of Mission with African High Commissioners and Ambassadors based in UK and Europe.
