In Defense Of Amaechi

To us, it was a fight for the soul of Rivers State, a battle to keep Nigeria united, and a quest for universal justice. Most of us did not have personal contact with the man, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, neither did we hold substantial forms of beneficial affinity with him. In fact, not a few of us received cold shoulders from those who hunted Amaechi's life; we became ready meats for their slaughter house.

Now, what is it with Amaechi? Why risk all for a man who barely knows your name? This Writer has been confronted with series of similar queries for a while now. But, truth be told, there's really no other option. Ye, we have seen politicians in Rivers State, save Amaechi and a few others, our political elites were not in touch with the reality of the times. There was a total disconnect between those who paraded around the corridors of power and the rising army of disenchanted youths.

The ongoing political revolution in Rivers State is the brain child of Rotimi Amaechi. Amaechi brought civility cum adventure into contemporary politics. Amaechi's name has been added to the list of very few Nigerian politicians who survived the hurricane of Federal might and 'bad belle' politics. He demonstrated to his followers the need to stand firm for whatever they believe in, irrespective of the fiery darts that might be thrown on their paths. In my view, this is simply the magic about the man who many now extol as the Lion of Niger Delta.

As the days go by, Social and Political Scientists in Nigeria must make ardent efforts at throwing more lights on what actually gave rise to the super terrestrial conviction that abides in the consciousness of those who stood by Amaechi throughout his travails.
