AASU Condemns Coup D’etat In Burkina Faso

By All Africa Students Union

The Secretariat of the All Africa Students Union (AASU) is following with a great shock the unfolding military take-over in Burkina Faso. A year ago, the people of Burkina Faso had demonstrated that they are the ones who can decide the direction their country must take.

Last year, indeed, the determined people did overthrow the then president, Blaise Compaore, who, through constitutional manipulation, tried to perpetuate his stay in power. Since then the country has been under the rule of a transitional government. Burkina became a pride of Africa and an example to follow in order to put an end to impunities on the African continent.

It is therefore inconceivable that barely a year after that event the Presidential Guard has decided to put an end to the process of restoring democratic rule in that country by overthrowing the interim government. This group of heavily armed men, blinded by the protection of their personal interests, are plunging that country in an unknown and dangerous journey where they will be the ultimate losers because the will of the people of Burkina faso shall triumph in the end.

The democratic forces around the world in particular Africans should not stay aloof of this crisis rather to be by the side of the people of Burkina faso to boot out this greedy and selfish small group of armed opportunists ready to walk on dead bodies in order to hang on power.

AASU condemns unreservedly this backward and uncalled dastardly act of coup d’etat in Burkina faso occurring at a moment that country was seen as reference for many Africans in their efforts to determine the way their country should take.

AASU calls on the International community and in particular the African Union (AU) and the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) not leave any stone unturned in order to bring back normalcy in that country by compelling the military junta to relinquish power immediately back to the transitional government.

Down with coup d’etat!
Long live democracy!
