New Imo CP Commended For Obeying Rule Of Law

By Iwuala Emperor

The new Commissioner of Police Imo State Mr. Taiwo Lakanu has been commended for his high regard for rule of law and obedience to court judgements.

This commendation came recently from an Owerri based lawyer and media practitioner Barr. Emperor Iwuala.

In a statement made available to the press, Barr Iwuala recounted how on the first day CP Lakanu assumed office at the Imo Police Command Headquarters Owerri, he got to know of a recent judgement of a court in Imo State ordering the release of a person detained by the police in the state which is said the new police chief swiftly complied with.

Speaking further, the Mbaise-born human right activist and former media aide to the Deputy Governor of Imo state hinted that the irony was that even when CP Lakanu initially gave directive that the court order be complied with, the men under him were delaying and frustrating the CP’s instruction until the Lagos-born police chief personally supervised the release of the detainee.

‘I must command CP Lakanu for being a person who holds rule of law to high esteem. He started demonstrating this even on the first day he assumed duty in office as the 31st Commissioner of Police in Imo State. The CP has made the police in Imo State to understand that the era of fragrant disobedience to court orders and unlawful excesses in the state police command is over.

I have heard and read a lot about CP Lakanu. His track record of 29 years in police service stands out. He has a lot of respect for lawyers and the law. He is among the highly educated, civilized and fine Nigeria Police officers and I am sure he will sanitize, re-orientate, re-organise and re-engineer the police in Imo State just as he did in all the places he has served’, Iwuala said.

It could be recalled that before his appointment as the new Commissioner of police Imo State, CP Lakanu had meritoriously served in various sensitive positions in the Nigeria Police. Recently, he took over as Imo Police Chief from CP Abdulmajid Ali having last worked as Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State.
