Indiscipline In The Nigerian Military

By Abdulbaqi Jari II

I strongly condemn the brutal and unprofessional way in which Nigerian military are conducting themselves in relation to military-civilian relationship. With reference to a picture placed on the front page of dailytrust newspaper of 10 August 2015, the picture showed a Nigerian soldier humiliating a civilian.

The pictured showed an Army officer wiping a civilian with a stick after putting him in a gutter. Now that Nigeria is fighting a war, instead of the military to handle fellow Nigerians with respect, they are still out there, beating and punishing anyone who crosses their path. Operation Zaman Lafiya Dole need our support.

The gallant officers we have been praying for their success day night should focus on winning this war, not humiliating us.

Since the return of democracy 16 years ago, the Nigerian military has refused to acknowledge the fact that the civilian leadership is in "full" control. Many a times they will go on rampage and kill many people, or wipe out a whole village or town.

No wonder the US government and all other friends of Nigeria refused to sell arms to Nigeria. The same military charged with the responsibility of protecting Nigeria and Nigerians are out there humiliating many fellow compatriots. What is the difference between our military and insurgents then?

President Buhari should act like a leader on this one. This must not be allowed to go free. Many of this kind are happening daily - many of the victims die as a result of physical wounds and psychological trauma.

I call on Mr President, military headquarters and all other agencies involved to look into this issues and address it accordingly.
