Medical Student Commits Suicide For Being Withdrawn From Medical School!

It has just been reported in the media that a medical student has committed suicide because he required to was withdraw from medical school after spending ten years!

It is sad that medicine in these climes should record high failure rates...irrespective of the fact that students study hard and have splendid academic histories!

This is unlike the situation abroad where pass rates are as near 100% as possible...or else medical educators are queried for putting taxpayers' monies to waste!

So much unlike our climes where they are not called to order...and are rather proud of returning high failure rates to university senates!

How I wish I was available to counsel that guy before he killed himself...as medicine is simply not worth the trouble!

For him to strive to obtain an MBBS degree meant he wanted to be on th right side of the law... But in Nigeria...private practice...all you need to front as a "doctor" is be a male paramedic...even a male auxiliary!

You would need work with a qualified doctor and apprise him of your true state of affairs. He then robes and cloaks you as if you were a qualified doctor as he presents you to staff and patients as a qualified doctor!

If his colleagues are in the know, they simply keep mum in a "paddy paddy" fashion and villainy other doctors who as much as raise an eyebrow! And be friendly with the police...

I have shouted myself hoarse on such issues while my articles were largely ignored!

I wrote about how specific medical examiners returned zero pass rates to the university senate, how they persistently and stubbornly used faulty machines to assess Multiple Choice Question papers...how examiners sleep off during practical exams, how subjective the Long Case format is...

But must things get to this stage before people react?

Medical education in Nigeria is extreme harsh and medical educators are uncaring inveterate bullies! God!!!!

Hmmm.... All this deliberate failing of medical students and residents in the name of standard... And yet, some people kept mum! What would Dr "Saddism" P.O. Olatunji say about this?!!!!!
