SAN FRANCISCO, July 23, (THEWILL) – The Nigeria Police said plans to promote 36,000 junior police officers have reached an advanced stage just as 6,000 new houses are to be given to other deserving policemen under a new deal for the Force.

The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase, disclosed this , Wednesday, in Gombe, while on a visit to police formations in the state even as he added that the Nigeria Police would soon be re-vitalised through overseas training under a collaboration with the European Union (EU).

Arase, who unveiled the plan while addressing the officers and men of the Nigerian Police at the headquarters of the Gombe State Police Command, said the new deal has already received the blessings of President Mohammadu Buhari, stressing that the Police require more training in order to meet up with the modern trends of the profession.

He however said that the current security challenges in the country were not peculiar to Nigeria, warning that the Police will not fold its arms and allow insurgents to overwhelm the nation.

According to Arase, “I have come to encourage my officers and men and to tell them that the internal security challenges we are facing are things that we can handle. We cannot allow hoodlums to overwhelm u and I will always do everything both in terms of their welfare and material, to enhance their working environment.”

He also disclosed that policemen who lost their lives in the fight against insurgency would be given hero's treatment.

“We have already given scholarships to the children of the Policemen that died at the checkpoint in Yobe two or three days ago and I have also promoted them posthumously because if those boys had not stopped that vehicle laden with explosives, only God knows the number of lives of innocent people that would have been lost. They have indeed sacrificed so that some Nigerians would be alive,” he said, adding that the welfare of the rank and file was his utmost desire, assuring that very soon they will smile.

“Already 36, 000 of them are going to be promoted, I am going to build about 6, 000 new houses for them. My main interest is the welfare of the Inspectors and rank and file. I am passionate about them and want to touch their lives.”

Speaking earlier at the meeting, the state Commissioner of Police, Kudu Nma, told Arase that the state government had supported the Command with standard communication equipment and 27 patrol vehicles, among others.

The state governor, Ibrahim Dankwambo, who received the Inspector General of Police at the Government House, Gombe, pledged more support for the state Police Command.

Dankwambo also used the opportunity to expressed gratitude to President Mohammadu Buhari for the prompt attention he gave the state when twin bomb blasts rocked the state last Thursday.

According to Dankwambo, “This is a good opportunity for me to appreciate our President. Immediately the incident happened, the President called me to find out what the situation was and the following morning, the Vice President came to commiserate with us.

“ We have never seen this kind of response in the past when similar incidents happened. We appreciate his concern and may God continue to guide him as he repositions our dear country.”

He however warned that the battle against insurgency cannot be won with military force only as he urged the Police and other security agencies to enlighten the people on the need to volunteer useful information that may help the security operatives.
