Nigerian democracy under threat, PDP tells Democratic and Republican parties

The Peoples Democratic Party on Thursday complained loudly about with it termed threat to the evolving democratic culture in the country by the newly inaugurated administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The PDP specifically requested the the Republican and the Democratic parties in the United States to closely monitor President Muhammadu Buhari's administration with a view to checking what it called “sharp violation of democratic principles in Nigeria.”

The opposition party met separately with the U.S. National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) in Abuja.

According to the party, the outcome of any election conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) under the leadership of Aminu Zakari will  not be acceptable to it.

The party had hitherto registered strong reservations on the appointment of Zakari the acting Chairman of the party, just a few hours after former INEC boss had handed over to another official of the commission who was senior to her.

The party alleges that the party smacks of nepotism and partisanship, as she had previous close association with President Muhammadu and Buhari’s close associate and incumbent governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir El-Rufai.

Besides, PDP asserts that Zakari had been obviously partisan both in views and actions during the past general elections.

During its visit to the two institutes, which was led by the party's National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, the party that Nigeria's democracy was being endangered by desperate political moves to use the country's electoral commission to score political gains.

PDP alleged that  the political scheming by government had put too much pressure on Nigeria's democracy.
