SAN FRANCISCO, July 16, (THEWILL) – As Muslim faithful in the country join their counterparts all over the world in celebrating the Eid-el-Fitr to mark the end of Ramadan, the Yobe State governor, Alhaji Ibrahim Gaidam, Thursday, called on the people of the state to show understanding and tolerance for others as well as have compassion for the needy.

He also reiterated his call that the Boko Haram insurgency ravaging the Northeast should be regarded as passing phase which societies are bound to experience from time to time.

The governor stated this in his message to the people of the state in commemoration of the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

According to Gaidam, “The fasting which we have observed has no doubt instilled in us self-control, discipline, perseverance, sense of sacrifice, fellow-feeling and charity in the Muslim faithful. As a result of the lessons we learnt from Ramadan fasting, we are expected to continue to demonstrate understanding and tolerance towards our neighbours and show compassion to those in need.

“This occasion therefore affords us the opportunity to make sober reflections and an appraisal of our conducts in relation to the teachings of the noble Qur'an and Sunnah of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW).

“It is anticipated that given the lessons learnt from the period of Ramadan fasting, our good people would not be found wanting in their adherence to the teachings of Islam as stipulated in Sharia laws which are part and parcel of our lives.”

On the Boko Haram insurgency, Gaidam said: “In consideration of the security challenges we have experienced over the years, I wish to reiterate my earlier calls for us to regard these trials as part of the divine scheme of affairs to which societies are subjected from time to time. If we persevere and continue to put our trust in our All-Merciful Creator, we will come out of the crises better and stronger.”

The governor however expressed optimism that with the change of government at the centre under a “committed, responsible and credible leadership,” the end of the atrocities perpetrated by the Boko Haram would soon end.

He also reassured that his administration would continue to focus on making life more meaningful for the people of the state.

Gaidam said that “the quest for a more meaningful development and societal progress can only be achieved if all our people live in peace so that we march towards the attainment of a just and prosperous state, concerned with the improvement in the well-being of its people, guided by the principles of democratic governance and social justice.”
