LASUSU : Can we be More Reasonable ?

By Esan Oyeniyi

As an educated elite who is been groomed by a prestigious university like LASU , one would expect an intellectually approach by the student union in handling issue most especially as it concerns the Students considering the state of insecurity the country is experiencing at present were their as been constant bombing in the last few months in the Country , In which the main target spot of this masked group is south-west , Lagos in particular . Will Lagosians ever forgive the students union or Lasu , if there so called unwarranted protests is been Hijacked by the terrorists or other group of evil perpetrators in the society to carry out their evil plans ? As the motto of the union implies " Militant but Reasonable " Lasusu should be more reasonable in addressing issue as were are in a knowledge political economy , were Protests , violence does not yield results again but dialogue and proper negotiation yield a more reasonable result.

The students’ union must pride themselves on the collective reputation for putting the whole students at the heart of everything they do, they must offer a wide range of unity, I believe, so be it all reasonable unionists, because the union is nothing except with one voice of all students. There are countless reasons why I’m of the opinion that the protest staged today is unconstitutional, barbaric, primitive and lastly unintellectual as the academic world excepted us to be. Where is the place of the Students’ Parliamentary Council in relation for the need for congress? I mean where all students’ voices must be heard without partiality? Are we of the opinion that the Union should exhibit a totalitarian system in the 21st century? I mean where some persons under the name of leadership will wake up one day and say let us all have protest? May I know the success of any protest from LASU? Every problem solved in LASU is a product of negotiation not protest? I don’t stand corrected, you can ask ERC or Seweto for OAU if I’m right?

We understand as students we are all victims of the crisis in LASU, considering the time factor we have spent good seven months under the name of first semester without an end. Our resumption, may I ask you all, was it not a trap? Have we truly resumed? The sincere answer is a BIG NO. That’s why examination can never and could never hold. Let all of us ask and answer some simple questions?

1. Where is the place of senate in the determination of date, time and place of examination?

2. What role does the management play in relation to exam and records?

3. What is the action to be taken by NUC if examinations hold?

4. How does that affect our academic calendar as an institution?

5. Are we all through with lectures?
6. How many of us are through with payment and registration?

Therefore, I’m of the view that the students’ union to write a letter of apology to all students and the society at large as regard today protest. The reason is simple, the union is to represent our views not personal ones. The students that dominated and supported the protest don’t have prior knowledge to the meaning unionism(100L). As a result of my interview with countless students present, I discovered that they are all happy because this is their very first time experiencing protest. What is the point? LASUSU, is this the way to rebrand LASU?
