Police raid kidnappers' den in Enugu

The Anti-Kidnap Unit of Enugu Police Command, yesterday, raided a kidnappers' den, along the new Ugwuogo-Nike-Opi-Nsukka expressway where suspected kidnappers had used as hideout.

Hapeless motorists and residents plying the road had decried consistent attacks by suspected armed bandits and Fulani herdsmen, who rob, maim, kidnap, rape and kill victims along the road.

But the police in a renewed bid to rid the road of miscreants last Thursday, commissioned an out-post, christened Unity Police Station, along the road to boost the response time during emergency.

Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu in a statement, said that the raid at the kidnappers den came after intelligence reports on the hideout reached them.

'The operatives encountered some suspected notorious kidnap gang at the hideout, leading to exchange of gun fire which left  three of the gang members fatally injured while some fled.

'Recovered in the hideout are 10 locally made pistols, charms and live ammunitions.

'We are appealing to members of the public, especially hospital owners to avail security operatives of information pertaining to anybody with gunshot wound even as we have cast our dragnet wide, to apprehend the fleeing suspects,' he said.
