Press Statement: Aasu On Political Violence In Africa

By ALL AFRICA STUDENTS UNION (AASU)

It is with great sadness that AASU is following the current political situation in Africa characterized by intolerance, violence and dishonesty for personal gains. All these are happening to the detriments of the wellbeing of the general population. These unfortunate occurrences are happening within and between political parties on one hand and between governments and oppositions on the other.

Last Wednesday 20th May 2015, the Upper East Regional Chairman of the main opposition party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party (NPP), was showered with acid and subsequently died a few hours after.

On Saturday 23rd May 2015, an opposition leader in Burundi, Zedi Feruzi, was shot dead in Bujumbura. It is worth recalling that since April 26, 2015 protests against Pierre Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office began in Burundi. It is estimated that at least 20 people have been killed in clashes between the police and protesters who say Nkurunziza’s bid for a third term in office constitutes a violation of the constitution.

Pierre Nkurunziza’s lust for power and greed are gradually pushing Burundi in yet another nightmare since the end of a brutal ethnic civil war in 2005 in that country.

AASU condemns unreservedly these murders and calls for proper investigations into these cowardly acts for the culprits to be punished accordingly.

Africa needs, dedicated and selfless leaders not selfish ones for its development and the prosperity of its people.

We, once again, call for a united and integrated Africa speaking with one voice in the defense and protection of our common interests.

Down with political violence!
Long live African Unity!
