MOGADISHU, Somalia, May 25, 2015/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- The Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Somalia (SRSG), Nicholas Kay, condemned an attack on two Somali MPs and their driver in Mogadishu yesterday and reiterated the United Nations continuing support for the work of the Federal Parliament.

Mr Yusuf Muhammad Dirir, a Member of the Federal Parliament was shot and killed yesterday with his driver. Another MP, Mr Abdullahi Boss Ahmed was wounded in the same attack.

“The assassination of Mr Yusuf Muhammad Dirir is an abhorrent act of terrorism,” SRSG Kay said. “The murder of MPs is an attempt to intimidate and undermine those working to build a better Somalia. Their killers will not achieve that objective.”

“I wish Abdullahi Boss Ahmed a speedy recovery and I commend all Somalia's MPs for their courage and dedication in the face of continued attacks against them. The UN is committed to supporting the important work of the Federal Parliament,” he added.

SRSG Kay offers his sincere condolences to the family and friends of all those who have suffered, as well as to the Federal Parliament of Somalia.
