PDP Chairman Adamu Muazu resigns

The National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ahmed Adamu Muazu, has resigned after weeks of intensive pressure from a cross section of the party for him to do so.

Muazu was accused of working against the party during the March 28 election, where the presidential candidate of All Progressives Congress, Muhammad Buhari, defeated President Goodluck Jonathan, who ran on the ticket of PDP.

PDP was dominant in Southsouth and Southeast political zones, with a decent showing in Southwest. But the abysmal performance of the party in all three zones in the North even in states that were formerly PDP strongholds ensured that President Jonathan lost woefully to his main challenger.

PDP faithfuls suspect that most of PDP governors from the North did little to help the party during the election, while a number of them worked for the success of opposition candidate.

The deputy national chairman of the party, Uche Secondus, has taken charge as as the party's acting national chairman pending the election of a substantive chairman.

Muazu who has been in the ‎United Kingdom for treatment over an undisclosed ailment sent in his resignation letter in the early hours of Wednesday.

The PDP national publicity secretary, Olisa Metuh, confirmed the chairman’s resignation, saying that the party leadership was already shopping for Muazu's replacement within the North east zone.
