Buhari Insists On Probing Alleged Missing $20 Billion Crude Revenue

SAN FRANCISCO, April 27, (THEWILL) – Nigeria's President-elect, General Muhammadu Buhari, Sunday said a probe will be conducted into the alleged missing $20 billion crude revenue which the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Lamido Sanusi declared missing from the Federation Account.

Buhari told members of the Adamawa State Chapter of his party, All Progressives Congress (APC), who paid him a visit at the party's headquarters in Abuja, that the current administration did not deal with the matter correctly, saying the federal government should have investigated the allegation properly to determine the correctness of the claim instead of firing the whistleblower.

“These are some of the issues we have been talking about… Instead of investigating whether it is true or not that $20 billion is missing from the Federation Account, they just sacked the former CBN governor who by God 's grace would later become the Emir of Kano.

“I even heard that some of people have started refunding some of the monies but I will not believe this until when I get into office and go and see for myself,” the President-elect, who once served as a military ruler in the 80s said in Hausa.

The NNPC and the current administration had disputed Sanusi's claim, accusing him of mischief and even commissioned PricewaterhouseCoopers to audit the NNPC. The government has however refused to make the full report of the audit public instead it released a summary which indicated that the NNPC had failed to remit about $1.4 billion into the Federation Account.

Buhari, who is seen to be tough on graft, defeated incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan in an election cycle that had corruption as the number one issue for voters.
