Obi In South-Africa...Condemns Xenophobic Attacks

By Mazi Odera

The former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi has called on South-Africans to stop the attack on foreigners, including Nigerians.

He made this call today while speaking at a meeting of Nigerian Union, an umbrella organisation of all Nigerians living in South Africa at the Nigerian Consulate in Johannesburg, South-Africa.

Obi who commended the stand of the South-African Government against xenophobic attack, called on Nigerians in South-Africa to remain law-abiding and treat one another as brothers and Sisters. He said that other Nationals in foreign land such as Indians and the Jews absorb the catastrophes of life because they are always together, assisting one another.

Explaining that he was in South Africa to access the situation and to offer assistance to Nigerian affected in the attacks. He said his coming was beneficial since by visiting the affected areas, he was able to see Nigerians with various degrees of injuriesthat resulted from the attacks. He expressed optimism that the government of both countries would work towards forestalling such attacks in future.

In their different reports, Nigerian chapters from different provinces gave accounts of the effect of the xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in their different zones. The meeting also exchanged ideas on how to guard against such attacks. They also thanked the Counsel General for the aggressive manner she reached out to Nigerians, including quartering some in the Official guest house. They thanked Obi for exemplary leadership that is evidently above political consideration.

The Nigerian Counsel General in Johannesburg, Her Excellency, Ambassador Uche Ajulu-Okeke requested all the Chapters to submit their various reports as basis for engaging the South-African Government in the search for enduring peace and harmony among them and Nigerians resident in the country.
