Burundi is succumbing into violence as the days pass. The country is sharply divided on the candidature of President Pierre Nkurunziza who wants to stay in power despite a two-term constitutional limit. The level of tension and violence increases per day with its scores of refugees and displaced people. When are, African leaders, going to learn from the mistakes of their colleaguesthatare even so fresh in our minds like events that led to the toppling of BlaiseCompaore in Burkina Faso.

Burundi, a country that has seen no peace for decades, is currently facing serious economic crisis with corruption and mismanagement putting untold hardships on majority of the population. The students are amongst the most affected segments of the society with their living and study conditions terribly deteriorating as time goes.

Currently the number of Burundians in transit centers is estimated at three thousand nine hundred and fifty (3950) refugees whose majority is women and children. The question is will the International Community and in particular the African Union (AU) allows another possible disaster in Burundi before taking action? It is clear that Nkurunziza's bid to run again as president is unconstitutional and a violation of the Arusha Accords that ended the 1993-2006 civil war.

The All Africa Students’ Union (AASU) calls on all democrats and peace loving people to pressurize Pierre Nkurunziza to abandon his selfish plan for the sake peace and the general interests of the people of Burundi.

We demand a more robust action of the AU in Burundi to compel Pierre Nkurunziza to respect the constitution of his country and all the peace Accords that had helped to end the civil war in order to avert any further violence and trauma on the people of that country.

Long live democracy!
