CAIRO, Egypt, March 2, 2015/African Press Organization (APO)/ -- Achim Steiner, UN Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) will be available for a limited number of one-on-one interviews during his visit to Egypt from 3-5 March 2015

Mr. Steiner will deliver a keynote address at the 15th Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN), attended by over 300 participants from 54 countries, including African Ministers of Environment, Finance and Development, UN and donor agencies, expert groups and civil society. UNEP hosts the Secretariat of the Ministerial meeting.

On this occasion, UNEP is launching a number of key reports to inform the deliberations:

UN Green Economy Report for Africa / Egypt:

• UNEP says power of investing in a greener economy to significantly boost GDP and life expectancy, create more and better jobs, and rapidly reduce poverty-gap in Africa;

• Egypt to Save Over US $2.4 Billion Annually, Cut CO2 Emissions by 13%, Water Consumption by 40% and Create 8 Million New Jobs, Through Transition to Green Economy

Climate Adaptation Gap in Africa:

• Africa, the continent with warming deviating most rapidly from "normal" conditions, could see the most rapidly changing climatic conditions, with adaptation costs rising to around US $50 billion per year by 2050 – even if international efforts keep global warming below 2°C this century.

The African Ministerial meeting comes just months ahead of the crucial climate change talks in Paris and the final round of negotiations on the Sustainable Development Goals in New York. Ministers aim to determine Africa's contributions, common position, challenges and opportunities in regards to such global issues.
