Boko Haram gunmen Friday stormed a local market in Mainok village, Kaga local government of Borno state, killing 15 traders and looting many stores for food items.

Local sources told THEWILL that the bandits stormed the town in the afternoon and began shooting sporadically forcing many people to scamper for safety and in the confusion, the insurgents carted away many foodstuffs.

The Friday market was earlier attacked last September by the insurgents who also killed no fewer than 36 traders .

A local trader, Modu Abba, who said he was lucky to have escaped the latest attack, said: ” I was not in the centre of the market when the attack started and Boko Haram were busy shooting into the market; many people died in the attack. I am alive because I laid flat on the floor and began to crawl out of the market until I saw a pickup van driver who was trying to escape with his vehicle; he was sympathetic enough to give me a lift.”

Also giving an account of the raid of the market, a policeman in Jakana village, which is just about 16km from Mainok market, said many traders were killed in the attack.

“We saw many traders running into Jakana from Mainok, some with minor injuries, and they informed us that many people were killed.

“After they had shot severally into the market, they surrounded the market and began to do selective killing, especially of traders that are from Jakana, they said some of the terrorists were heard shouting and instructing their colleagues not to spare people from Jakana.”

“Two choppers of the Nigeria Army were spotted flying towards the forest around Yobe State which was the direction the terrorists took while leaving Mainok,” he disclosed, craving anonymity.
