Bayelsa State Governor, Hon. Seriake Dickson over the weekend established a Women Development Centre as well as reconstituted the board for the Youth Development Centre dedicated to their empowerment.
Inaugurating the Directors General and members of the Centres for Women and Youth Development in Yenagoa, Governor Dickson said, the responsibilities of the boards include the mobilization and development of youths towards contributing their quota to society.
To this end, he directed the leadership of the youth centre to furnish his office with a blueprint on the various training programmes it is expected to run, noting that, government has already constructed a befitting youth centre located at Kaiama, Kolokuma/Opokuma local government area of the state.
Governor Dickson, who said the centre has the capacity to accommodate one thousand youths, remarked that the centre was equipped with modern facilities for their training and re-orientation.
According to him, the centre will enjoy government's financial support as well as retain consultants that, would collaborate with the centre to organize periodic seminars and workshops for empowerment of the youths.
On the Women development Centre, Governor Dickson explained that, the centre was expected to partner with other relevant agencies towards addressing social issues affecting women.
He said, the Director General and members of the centre were expected to work closely with women leaders across the state in collating data about women and their businesses in all the communities as well as the social challenges facing them.
Governor Dickson also disclosed that, a micro-finance bank would be established soon, adding that, the government has already secured a provisional license for it.
Giving thumbs up for the hardworking women of the state, the Governor noted that 90% of them were bread winners of their families and stressed the need to support them in their role in nurturing society.
Responding, the Director General of the Centre for Women Development, Barr. Eunice Akene and her youth counterpart, Mr. Victor Okubonanabo expressed gratitude to the Governor for their appointments and pledged their commitment towards the actualization of the set goals.
