There are strong indications that former Abia state deputy governor and candidate of the United Progressive Party (UPP) in the 2015 governorship election, Comrade Chris Akomas has shelved his ambition and may support his kinsman and PDP counterpart, Dr. Okezie Ikpeazu.

A close associate of the former deputy governor told Pointblanknews.com that he is no longer running for the February 28 polls, adding that Akomas has been consulting with his trusted supporters on his next move.

Sources hinted that he has made attempts to collapse his structure into the PDP governorship campaign organization.

Barely a month to the February 28 governorship election, Akomas who had on December 11, emerged candidate of the UPP in Abia state, is yet to embark on political campaigns to any of the 17 local government areas of the state.

Prior to his emergence as the UPP candidate, nothing was heard of him since he was booted out of office as the Abia state deputy governor in 2010.

His party, the UPP is new to the political field as many people wondered why Akomas who served as Commissioner for Commerce and Industry during the Chief Orji Uzor Kalu administration before he emerged deputy to Gov. Theodore Orji in the latter's first tenure chose to run under a weak platform. Even as the UPP's presidential candidate, Chief Chekwas Okorie hails from Abia state, it is clear that the party lack structures to secure a seat or pose a threat to any of the leading political parties in the state.

There are fears that Akomas may have secured the UPP governorship ticket to use it to negotiate his return to the PDP. A PDP chieftain from  Akomas' community in Obingwa local government, who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the former deputy governor is still lamenting his 'blunder' in choosing to run against his boss, Gov. Orji in the 2011 governorship poll where he flew the flag of the Progressive People Alliance (PPA) and lost.

“Chris Akoma is still lamenting the political mistake he made in 2011 where he contested against his boss. He is still regretting the decision as those who used him to fight the governor abandoned him at the poll. Had he looked well, he would have served out the tenure ending on May 29, 2015 with the governor. As my kinsman, I feel for him,” the chieftain said.

Attempts to reach Akomas could not bear fruit. His media assistant, Ben Ovie, said he will get back to our correspondent but never did.
