Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano, has approved a salary increase of 15 per cent for the state's workers.

Announcing this development in a press release made available to journalists in Awka, yesterday, Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr Emeka Ozumba, said the latest salary increase, which took effect from this month, was approved at the Monday State Executive Council meeting held at the Governor's Lodge, Awka, and presided over by Obiano.

Quoting the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Mr. Tony Onyima, government said the gesture was in fulfillment of the promise made by Obiano on assumption of office, to put smiles on the faces of civil servants in the state.

Ozumba recalled that during the governor's first meeting with the state's workforce, Obiano had promised to raise the salary of civil servants and bring it at par with those of their counterparts in the local government system.

The statement also stated that the new move to boost the workers' welfare was contingent on improvement in the state's Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, which at that time stood at N500 million monthly.

The government noted, however, that with aggressive pursuit of IGR as well as the effective blockage of loopholes, which hitherto led to loss of substantial revenue, the current IGR of the state has risen to over N1billion.

He called on civil servants in the state to reciprocate the government's gesture by improving their productivity and work assiduously for a better Anambra State.
