*SAYS MAIDUGURI, BORNO STATE MUST NOT FALL TO TERRORISTS:

Against the backdrop of reported massive incursions and attacks by armed terrorists into the old North East regional headquarters of Maiduguri, Borno State, a call by a civil society group-HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA [HURIWA] has been made to the Federal Government of Nigeria to immediately demand the military intervention by the United Nations Security Council and the African Union Commission to battle the scourge of heavy bombardments and annexations of parts of North East Nigeria by armed terrorists and the horrendous war crimes going on in North East of Nigeria.

Besides, HUMAN RIGHTS WRITERS ASSOCIATION OF NIGERIA [HURIWA] has called for comprehensive support for the Nigerian military and the civilian vigilante groups in the North East so as to ensure that more cities and communities are not annexed by the armed Islamists who have demonstrated an undying zeal to ruthlessly wipe out the civil populace and take over a large percentage of the territory of Nigeria. “The Nigerian State must transparently reach out to all our friendly nations all around the World for concrete military support and must not continue to delude ourselves that we can go it alone since contemporary history of war on terror globally has revealed that no single nation has ever successfully battled the emerging scourge of Islamic extremism and terrorism”.

HURIWA said it is inconceivable that each time news report emerges from the Nigerian military quarters of an imminent massive manhunt of the terrorists it is only then that these armed insurgents usually wage daring raids on hitherto fortified cities such as Maiduguri and Damaturu just as the group has canvassed a dispassionate probe of the ongoing counter terrorism battles by the two chambers of the national assembly as a matter of national emergency to determine why the Nigerian military has been unable to conclusively defeat these armed mass killers.

In a statement jointly endorsed by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Miss Zainab Yusuf HURIWA said that it has become increasingly imperative and urgent that all measures needed to be adopted to halt the ongoing mass killings going on in the North East of Nigeria perpetrated by armed Islamic terrorists must now be activated since any further delay is not only dangerous but would lead to further annexation of significant landmass of North Eastern Nigeria by armed terrorists and their foreign affiliates bent on foisting their extremist brand of Islamic brutal regime on innocent Nigerians who unfortunately found themselves in the line of fire.

HURIWA stated thus; “Whilst we condemn totally the continuous mass genocide going on in the North East of Nigeria by the armed Islamic rebels, we hereby call on the Nigerian Government to ensure that Maiduguri the Borno state capital does not fall into the hands of terrorists because of the monumental humanitarian catastrophes that would follow as a logical consequence of such a scenario. Apart from the fact that nearly three million people may be rendered internally displaced many more innocent Nigerians would also be killed if the Nigerian military is not supported now to wage an all out war to defeat these terrorists once and for all”.

“We can not continue to think that we can engage these murderous armed gangs of mass killers alone without meaningful and concrete military partnership with genuinely friendly nations around the World. Science based research has uncovered the interconnectedness of the Nigerian based terrorists and other well funded global jihadists fighters in the Arabian Peninsula and Afghanistan. Nigerian State must exercise her privileged position as an important member of the United Nations to call for immediate military intervention to stop the North East genocide now”, HURIWA stated.
