Buhari Picks Amaechi As Deputy.

All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) has picked Rivers State Governor Chibuike Amaechi as his running mate, a top APC source has said.

Amaechi's emergence may have ended months of debate on the religious colouration of the APC presidential ticket.

The APC source said Amaechi was selected today after hours of meeting in a chieftain's home in Lagos.

However, a close confidant of Buhari denied knowledge of Amaechi's emergence, saying he wasn't aware of such information.

Buhari is Muslim and Fulani from Katsina State. He was once quoted as urging muslims to vote only muslim candidates, an allegation he has consistently denied.

Amaechi is Christian and Ikwerre from the oil-rich Rivers State. He is believed to have helped Buhari clinch the APC presidential ticket.

Amaechi's emergence as Buhari's running mate might significantly affect the electoral fortunes of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State.

Amaechi's Ikwerre kinsman, Chief Nyesom Wike is seeking to succeed him as governor, a move that has greatly divided the people of the state.
