CNN ‘African Voices’ To Feature Renowned Nigerian Architect, Olajumoke Adenowo

By Maryann Balogun

This week, one of Nigeria's foremost female architects, Olajumoke Adenowo will feature on 'African Voices', CNN's International weekly half-hour programme highlighting Africa's most engaging personalities.

'African Voices' focuses on Adenowo's passion for functional and beautiful buildings from a young age, and how continuous travelling with her parents across Europe exposed her to historic landmarks and buildings which inspire architecture across the world.

Adenowo tells the programme how growing up with two educated parents fortified her passion, and how a boss who believed and encouraged her through thick and thin contributed to her success in the architectural industry.

She tells 'African Voices': “My dad didn't subscribe to the cliché "she's a female she can't make good. He spoke to me as a three year old and we had discussions where I could tell him what I thought about a building, a person and about the future. Growing older and out of the university, I think my boss saw my passion and he gave me a chance and he was so good to me. If we had more mentors like that in Africa, I believe the younger generation would blossom faster”.

Adenowo went on to start her own company, A-D Consulting, at the age of 25 and has designed over 70 buildings in the past 20 years - projects such as gated communities, institutional buildings and 2500 sitter auditoriums of all kinds. Iconic offices for the likes of coca cola international, L'Oreal Central and West Africa, residences, and estates.
