Governor Gabriel Suswan of Benue State has called on the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal to set aside his personal ambition and spare the country the unnecessary political tension resulting from his insistence on retaining the speakership position.

According to Suswam, the Speaker should resign from his office without further delay.

The governor, in an exclusive interview with National Mirror recently also warned the political class against making unguarded, careless and reckless comments that have the potential of disuniting the country.

The governor also said that the Boko Haram insurgency grew unabated because of the connivance with the political class, particularly, those opposed to the government of President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said: “People are playing politics with everything. Tambuwal himself is a lawyer, he is a very close friend of mine and we have operated very closely. I would expect naturally as a man of honour knowing that on moral grounds if he decides to defect to a minority party in the House, he should honourably step down as Speaker and keep his integrity and honour intact.

“I find it very unfortunate that we are playing politics that will destroy the country because if this country goes down, it is not only PDP that is going down, each and every one of us will go down.

“It is an unwritten law that the party with the majority is the one that keeps the leadership of the house. For any person to cling unto it knowing that he is staying with the minority just because of that confusion that we are able to successfully create within that system is destroying that institution.

“We need to set precedent, we need to live above our own selfish interest and that is what I expect from him because Tambuwal is a gentleman and a young man that has a lot before him. I think and I believe that reason will prevail eventually and he needs to step down and allow the institution to grow.

“I am very worried at the prospect of what will happen to our democracy because we have become so selfish, it has become more about me; it is no longer about us or about the country. That is very unfortunate and I think we should live above that.”

Suswan expressed the need for the political class to operate with caution to avoid disastrous consequences.

“We need to as practitioners, operate with some level of maturity. People are so immature by some of the comments they make; comments that have the potency of disuniting this country. People engage in actions that are capable of destroying the country and nobody frowns at it.
