Underworld Men Comb School Of Nursing & Midwifery Uyo...Students Call On Govt To Beef Up Security

By Ani John

Thursday last week was another nightmare for the students of School of Nursing and Midwifery, Anua in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom State, as armed bandits stormed the female hotels and carried out their nefarious activities for hours without challenge.

Speaking to our reporters, one of the students who preferred anonymity, said via Skype Satellite, that the underworld men combed the hostels carting away several valuables, including smart phones, laptops, and money meant for the students' upkeep and purchase of school materials.

The student also confided that members of the criminal gang also coercive sexual advances, but stopped short of going into detail.

"They came when some of the students were already asleep, while others were reading and preparing for weekend test. Some of the doors and windows were open for ventilation since we don't have power for almost a year now as there's no light or working fan. You know I cannot go into detail because we have some married women here whose husband might not tolerate such ugly incident happening to their wives.”

Another student who preferred to be addressed as Mrs. Ekanem said they live in constant panic and fear every day as the invasion of the armed robbers is now a recurrent decimal to their school. She called on the Akwa Ibom state government to come to their aid by providing parameter fencing, electricity supply, which seem a mirage to them for almost a year now.

This place is owned by the state government, but it was okay when the school was controlled by the founding fathers. There is no light, no fence, and no security guard. Anybody can walk in and out freely and without question. It seems the local communities too are taking advantage of the porous security situation to exploit us. I want the government to know that there are some people in the state trained to provide health care to the state and nation but are treated with absolute levity and scorn. Please, tell the governor to come to our aid before these criminals start killing us or transmitting all kinds of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) to a generation." Mrs. Ekanem cried out.

Effort to reach the Akwa Ibom Police Public Relation Officer yielded no dividends; But a senior police officer who led the police crack team to the school confirmed the incident and said police have temporary outlawed the movement of individuals in the area from 9:00 PM. He said anyone caught in the flip side of nine will be prosecuted.

“I can confirm to you that the police will be monitoring movement from 9:00 PM in this area and will arrest anyone roaming the area. The major problem is that there is no parameter fencing at the school that could help checkmate the movement of people in and out of the school.” The Police officer assured.
