The Kwara state police have arrested three suspects of a six man gang who attacked and robbed the family of a former Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ilorin, Prof. Bayo Lawal, in Ilorin.

According to Punch the suspects – Samuel Olawale, Segun Ogunjobi and Alhaji Danjuma Abu were paraded with others before journalists by the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Salihu Garba.

The suspects who said the robbery was their first operation blamed their actions on the influence of their friends and vowed never to commit the crime again if pardoned.

Ogunjobi, a barber said “I live at Ojuelegba in Lagos. I only came here for visit when a friend lured me into taking part in this robbery.

Olawale, a kogi state indigene furniture maker who said he thought he could make some quick money before returning back to Lagos said:

“I live at Ojuelegba in Lagos. I only came here for visit to Ilorin for the Sallah celebration when a friend lured me into taking part in this robbery. I have never robbed before.   “My friends initiated me into the act.”

” I really regret my action now.”
Meanwhile the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Salihu Garba said the suspects were arrested by men of the State Anti-Robbery Squad are members of the same gang that have been perpetrating terror in Ilorin and they will be charged to court. While the police are on the look out for the fleeing suspects.

He also stated the weapon they used and exhibits such as nine wrist watches; two cameras, one white garment and jewellery have been recovered from the police.

Garba said the professor reported penultimate Monday that around 2.30am, his house was invaded by a six-man robbery gang, who took away wristwatches, cameras, clothes and jewellery.
