HURIWA BACKS NFIC BILL

By Emmanuel Onwubiko

As the Federal House of Representatives today [Wednesday September 24th 2014] is set to debate at the plenary session the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Center's 2014 bill, the democracy inclined Non-Governmental organization-Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria [HURIWA] has canvassed quick concurrence to the legislation which has already been passed by the Senate.

In a statement to the media by the National Coordinator Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko and the National Media Affairs Director Ms. Zainab Yusuf, HURIWA said the NFIC bill if concurred and signed into law by the President then the twin evils of financial crimes and terrorism financing will be more vigorously fought without any bureaucratic inhibitions by any of the anti-graft bodies in the country.

The Rights group further stated that since the new bill to grant autonomy to the NFIC encompasses provisions empowering the body to initiate prosecution of suspects much more robustly then the scourge of money laundry and terrorism financing could be more professionally confronted even as the group stated that since the body will work closely with the central Bank of Nigeria, it will be much effective in tackling these vicious circle of financial crimes and terrorism financing.

HURIWA stated thus; "scourge of money laundering and terrorism in virtually every part of the globe today, is a matter of very serious concern not only to world leaders but also to the entire human race. Since the early nineties, what started as isolated incidents of suicide bombings largely in the Middle East has increasingly grown in leaps and bounds and has now become a monster threatening to consume planet earth in its entirety."

The Rights group stated that the eye of the World is on the nation to take measures to set out much more effective legislative and legal frameworks to confront the challenges of terrorism financing and money laundry which have dented the public image of the country. HURIWA stated that it is a shame that since the NFIU now NFIC was domiciled within the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission it was unable due to bureaucratic and inexplicable reasons to track down sponsors of terrorists that have wrecked unprecedented bloody violence on the nation. The group expressed optimism that Speaker Aminu Wazri Tambuwal has shown tremendous leadership qualities good enough to guarantee that the House of Representatives will concur with the Senate in passing the NFIC executive bill which will be a legacy piece of legislation for which generations yet unborn will be eternally appreciative of the heroic effort of all the stakeholders contributing to its emergence.
