Kwankwaso: The Candidate APC Needs

Mohammed Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso is a man who believes more in content than in form, more in reform than in rhetoric.    He is a man of integrity, honesty and compassion. His achievements in Kano State speak for itself. He has been able to inspire his people, energize the lethargic, widen the horizon of their ambition and the set them on the fast track to economic self reliance. His government has improved lives and is strengthening conditions for sustainable economic and social development. His success in Kano is partly attributable to his ability to analyse complex problems and come up with creative solution.    There is no way to overstate how great a leap in perspective that is in a country like ours.    This is a country where we have had a long run of ill luck in leadership.    In a country where most our leaders lack imagination and wisdom, Kwankwaso is a breath of fresh air. We need a kind of change that will end economic underperformance, stop the terrifying accumulation of debt and reestablish a secure fiscal foundation for Nigerian national security. This man has what it takes to transform Nigeria.

Kwankwaso is a selfless a leader. So much of our modern culture is characterized by stories of self indulgence and self destruction. Our flawed human nature keeps pointing us toward the self driven life at every turn. But the way of self absorption leads only to brokenness and despair. We need a kind of leader that knows that practicing love and charity without expecting anything in return is essential to creating a mind free of jealousy and hatred. Our leaders must understand that a righteous individual must strive for social justice through giving. All religious faith speaks to our shared obligations to help one another. Today Kwankwaso is seen as an heir apparent to the political dynasty of Malam Aminu Kano.    Like his mentor, Aminu Kano, his political dreams and aspirations transcend Kano state. Those who paint a repugnant picture of him do not know what he has achieved in Kano State. Due to his love for humanity, he has prevented a lot of religious uprising that would have led to needless loss of lives and property. At every turn, he has preached peace, tolerance and love. His desire is that people should live in harmony despite cultural and religious differences.

His Kwankwasiya template of governance has brought succor to the people of the ancient town of Kano. This political philosophy places emphasis on business unusual. The government of Kano state used to spend over two billion naira annually in sponsorship of pilgrims to Saudi Arabia. To him, that is a sheer waste of resources that would have been used to better the lives of the common man. It can only take a man with guts and love for the common man to stop such wasteful practice. He proceeded to deploy the money in the service of common good and the alleviation of poverty. His generosity and unusually strong sense of self exerts a positive influence on his people. Some of us have been fed a diet of horror stories that Kwankwaso is a man with horns and a tail. But he is welcoming and charming. He is forthright and affable.    This amble governor arrives virtually everywhere in Kano state on a tumultuous wave of support. It is wrong to think that money and acquisitiveness are just what motivates him. The man is mindful of his place in history. He is living an impactful life and is terribly enthusiastic about the future of Nigeria. Kwankwaso simply wants to contribute his own quota to the development of this great country.

According to one political commentator, the governor of Kano State is a prudent manager of resources. In a land where governors are using the security votes for personal aggrandizement, he has invested a huge chunk of the money in education and infrastructural development of the Kano municipal.    More than a thousand indigenes of the state are on government scholarship abroad to study medicine, engineering and aviation.      It can only take a man of courage to insist that seventy five percent of all revenue that accrued to his state should be dedicated to capital projects with only twenty five percent for the recurrent. Kwankwaso believes that for all our divisions-and many of them are real and powerful-we can really become a more tolerant country that embraces people's differences and respect people who are not like us. He is of the view that we can transform into an open society where people will be judged more on their talents and their skills and their commitment to an ideal and a creed, as opposed to what tribe they come from or what God they worship.

Kwankwaso has a singular ability to transcend personal vendetta, humiliation or bitterness. He has a prodigious capacity for work. The All Progressive Congress (APC) should take a chance on this great man. He has love for Nigeria and Nigerians. In a recent Interview, Kwankwaso stated that 'Today whether you are from the South or North, Christian or Muslim does not matter; what really matter is how to get peace back. We have seen a situation in this country where some people are raising their own flags, it doesn't help anybody. Every square inch of this country belongs to Mr. President. It doesn't matter what religion, culture or people they are. People are being killed, maimed and even taken away on daily basis. As we speak we have thousands of Nigerians in Niger Republic, Cameroun and Chad as refugees and nobody is talking about them. They are just there at the mercy of their host.'
