SAN FRANCISCO, September 14, (THEWILL) - Former governor of Borno state, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, who is expected to pay a condolence visit to Alhaji Kashim Imam in Maiduguri on Monday, has raised the alarm over alleged plan by Governor Kashim Shettima to embarrass him during the visit.

Modu-Sherrif who raised the alarm on Sunday also said he knows the source of the ongoing “smear campaign” against him.

Speaking through his spokesman, Inuwa Bwala, who is a former Information Commissioner in the state, Modu-Sherrif alleged that there was a grand design by agents of the Borno State governor to embarrass him.

He alleged that the governor has “hired some political thugs to carry placards denouncing his benefactor with the intent to embarrass him,” during Monday visit to Maiduguri to condole with Alhaji Kashim Imam over the loss of his mother.

According to Bwala, the security agencies had been alerted for necessary precautionary measures “but it became necessary to call public attention to the unwarranted actions of the governor and his cohorts to cause disaffection and unnecessarily heat up the polity.”

Bwala also stated that “Sheriff is not deterred by the smear campaign targeted at his person as they know the sources of the mischief and their sponsors.”

He said Modu- Sheriff also plans to finalise arrangement for his defection from All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) during the trip to Maiduguri.

The former governor was recently fingered by the Australian hostage negotiator, Dr. Steven Davis, over alleged sponsorship of Boko Haram.0

The allegation was also supported by human rights lawyer , Femi Falana, and Nobel Laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka.

Modu-Sherrif's trouble was further compounded by his recent visit to Chad when he was sighted with President Goodluck Jonathan during the President's visit to that country.
