Ebola: New Case Reported In Lagos, Victim Had Minor Symptoms – Health Minister

BEVERLY HILLS, September 08, (THEWILL) - Nigeria Monday announced a new case of Ebola disease in Lagos bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 19 since the disease arrived the country from Liberia.

Health Minister, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu who made the disclosure during a briefing said the 19th case is the fiancé of one of the primary contacts of Mr. Patrick Sawyer, an infected Liberian-American man who travelled to Lagos before dying.

According to the Minister, initial test results on the latest case were unclear but further tests confirmed the disease with minimal symptoms. He however said the patient has since recovered from the disease.

With the development, Lagos and Port Harcourt have recorded fifteen and four confirmed cases of the disease respectively, while the number of deaths from it stands at seven (five in Lagos and two in Port Harcourt), the Minister said adding that nine persons have been successfully treated and released.

'The latest is the sister of the Port Harcourt doctor who was discharged from the isolation ward in Rivers State on Sunday. At the moment only one person, the wife of the Port Harcourt doctor, is on treatment in the isolation ward in Lagos,' the Minister said, adding that she is no longer symptomatic and may be discharged this week after all tests have been completed.

He confirmed that Lagos and Port Harcourt currently have 27 and 477 persons respectively under surveillance.
