IYC Election: Between Transformation Agenda And Sinclairs’ Ambition

There is no doubt that President Good luck Jonathan's presidency has transformed so many things in the country. Apart from the sectoral transformations which we have all seen and witnessed, various socio-political as well as ethno-cultural organisations are also undergoing transformation. The latest is the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC), an umbrella organisation of all Ijaw youths of the Niger Delta region.

One visible transformation witnessed so far is the use of intellectual power in championing the cause of all Ijaw youths in Nigeria. This why the likes of Comrade George Adioni Sinclair can now vie for the post of the Publicity Secretary in the forthcoming election of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Chapter of the Ijaw Youth Youths Council (IYC) slated for September.

I decided to write about this gentleman because unlike his contemporaries in the oil-rich Niger Delta region who use force of arms, threats, intimidations and molestations to drive home their points, Comrade Sinclair has been very civil in championing the cause of the Ijaw youths before now. This is why he has won various local and international awards, apart from the first class education acquired.

Born on 22nd of October 1981 in Akipelai Community of Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State. He attended the St. Andrew's State School 111 Port Harcourt where he passed with distinction in 1992. Thereafter, he went to the prestigious Sports Institute in River State where he passed in flying colours in 1998 before proceeding to the Bayelsa State College of Arts and Science, Yenagoa where he bagged a Diploma in Law in 2002.

The young George proceeded to the Abia State University Uturu, where he also bagged a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and International Relations. Thereafter, he proceeded to the University of East London where he studied Business Information System and graduated with first class honours in 2014, thereby making Nigeria proud in faraway United Kingdom (UK).

As an activist, in June 2009, Comrade George Adioni Sinclair won an award of the Dynamic Peace Ambassador from the United Nations Peace Federation following his numerous peace and reconciliatory activities in the Niger Delta region. He also has different certificates to his credits. For example, in 2009, he obtained a certificate from the Emory University Atlanta Georgia (USA) in Non-Violence, while in March 2010; he obtained another certificate from the United States Institute of Peace in Conflict Analysis.

He is currently a Coordinator of the Niger Delta Youth Leaders Forum, a socio-political organisation advancing the cause of democracy in Nigeria as well as supporting President Good luck Jonathan's re-election bid in 2015.

He is also a Consultant to PDP Project Reloaded, a frontline PDP Support group saddled with the mandate of promoting and defending the interest of the ruling part in all frontiers. He is currently vying for the post of a Publicity Secretary in the FCT Chapter of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC).

Just like the profounder of the Normative Media Theory who postulated that media operators should be more concerned with what the media ought to be doing in society instead of what there are actually doing, George Adioni Sinclair is vying for the post of the Publicity Secretary of the FCT Chapter of the Ijaw Youth Council because he wants to professionally man the Information unit of the IYC Abuja Chapter.

This is because of the fundamental role of the media in propagating the values of peace and non-violent belief in the mind of every Ijaw youth in Nigeria as well as supporting the Transformation Agenda of President Good Luck Ebele Jonathan.

Besides, the Transformation Agenda of the Jonathan's administration which has penetrated every nooks and cranny of the country needs to be domiciled in the minds and beliefs of the oil rich Niger Delta youths. Hence, some of those youths who still indulge in sea piracy, militancy, kidnapping and other anti-social behaviours needs to be reached by a young man with every sense of vigour and energy as well as using effective communicational as a tool for development.

For example, if a youth in the creek can be told that the Federal Government of Nigeria is not an enemy, but a friend; the few ones still threatening the fall of heaven if the Federal Government Amnesty programme is stopped next year will have a thorough rethink and a change of mind leading to backtracking from taking any antithetical or undemocratic action in 2015.

Hence, IYC been a very vital organisation which every Niger Delta Youths belongs needs the qualities and skills of Comrade George Adioni Sinclair who understands the tenets of democracy, rule of law and can as well use communication tools in ensuring uninterrupted peace in both the oil rich region of the Niger Delta region and Nigeria in general.
