SAN FRANCISCO, August 26, (THEWILL) - A truck conveying dried weeds suspected to be Indian Hemp from Akure, the Ondo State capital, has been intercepted and the driver arrested by the Borno State Police Command in Maiduguri, the state capital.

The Public Relations Officer of the State Police Command, Gideon Jubrin, disclosed this Tuesday, while parading the suspect, Kole Aladejobi, before newsmen in Maiduguri.

He said the suspect was smart enough to beat several security checks with his consignment from Akure before he was eventually busted in Maiduguri by men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of the Nigeria Police, Borno State Command.

Aladejobi however denied knowledge of the Indian Hemp, saying he was only a mechanic.

“I'm an auto-mechanic in Akure in Ondo State. I don't know anything about the Indian Hemp. The people who own the lorry just called me to repair the lorry in Kogi and I went. They asked me to follow them to Maiduguri in case the lorry develops fault again,” he told journalists at the SARS office.

The suspect also insisted that he was hired as a mobile mechanic for a price of N10, 000 for the trip, saying he didn't know the whereabouts of the driver or the content of the consignment in the vehicle.

However, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Jubrin, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), dismissed the suspect's claims, saying Aladejobi was the driver and only person in the lorry.

“Our men acted on a tip-off by a good spirited Nigerian that they suspect a lorry that took off from Akure in Ondo State may be carrying dried weeds suspected to be Indian Hemp. So we followed the lead until we intercepted him here in Maiduguri,” the PPRO said.

According to Jubrin, the 248 compressed blocks of the weeds were carefully concealed in the second compartment of the green colour Mercedes Benz lorry with registration number KW 886 XA.

He said the suspect also carefully sealed-off the blocks of hemps in the compartment and the loaded bags of cheese balls in the second compartment to conceal the substance.

Warning people engaging in such acts to desist in their interest, he vowed that anybody caught would face the full wrath of the law.

He also assured that the police would not relent in the fight against the production, circulation and use of dangerous drugs as well as other criminal acts.
