ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ON CONTEMPORARY MEDICAL ISSUES

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ON NIG MED EXAMINERS

Nigerian medical examiners perpetrate these atrocities under the guise of "standard"...and some colleagues are no less fixated...as they admonish us to refrain from taking these matters to the public domain. Medical examiners here are low in self-esteem, fixated in achaic ideas and methods, are given to wanton tyranny, are ill-trained for the job of teaching and student appraisal....and are ever so determined to retain the status quo because there are no checks and balances! The most scary prospect resides in the fact that such unfettered tyranny breeds future tyrants and ego- depleted bullies....as like begets like..... It is so deep-rooted and so pervasive that declaring a national emergency on the issue would not be an exaggeration.....since it threatens the future of healthcare delivery in Nigeria.

We need to introduce a masters degree programme in medical education or post doctoral diploma in education as the minimum criterion for examiners in the postgraduate medical colleges. There is a maxim that you can only give me what you have. Subsequently a masters degree in medical education should be intercalated with the residency training. I have always been an unrepentant advocate of runing a postgraduate medical education that will equip doctors both professionally and academically such that you can have at least an intercalated masters degree and possibly a PHD along with the Fellowship diploma.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS ON HOW MEDICINE DRAINS DRS PHYSICALLY AND MENTALLY.

Rest is absolutely necessary after tiring the body and the brain...but would the profession allow it? Grapling with the "regular" schedule of a doctor is bad enough for residents...as the consultants mostly laze away, give innane orders and whine away! But as paramedics refuse to perform their duties thus compelling us to give patients our mobile numbers, the toll on our physical and mental wellbeing is high.

Alas! for this nation has lost its precious dignity. How could someone that is entrusted to saving the lives of its citizens be made to face lots of hell... My heart shed tears for this nation as my eyes could be wet of hopes for these great men, these life savers- who put their own lives on line for their patients! I pray may the good Lord, God Almighty restore sanity to the governments in all their dealings and may He continue to bestow His favours upon our 'great doctors' world wide.

I hope this government reassessment committee set up will address these issues in order to solve them.
