Jonathan appoints Suleiman Abba new IGP

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has announced the appointment of AIG Suleiman Abba as the new Inspector-General of Police.

Special Adviser to the President(Media & Publicity), Dr. Reuben Abati, who confirmed the appointment in a statement on Thursday, said that the appointment is with effect from Friday, August 1, 2014.

Abba replaces incumbent IGP, Mr. Mohammed Dahiru Abubakar who retired from service Thursday after attaining the mandatory 35 years in service.

AIG Abba, currently the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, comprising Abuja, Kaduna and Niger states, replaces the incumbent Inspector-General of Police, IGP

The incoming Inspector-General, a lawyer, hails from Jigawa State and is an alumnus of the Nigerian Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies.

Positions previously held by him in the Police include Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT Command, Deputy Force Secretary and Commissioner of Police, Rivers State.

Abba was amongst the five senior officers – two DIGs from the South-South and North West, and three AIGs from North West, South-South and North Central respectively – considered for the office.

Abba had served as the Commissioner of Police in Rivers State; Deputy Force Secretary; Deputy Commissioner of Police (Deputy Force Sec) and Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of State CID, FCT Police Command. He was also the Commissioner of Police who supervised the conduct of the presidential and governorship election in Lagos State in 2011.

He also served as the ADC to Mrs. Maryam Abacha, the wife of late military ruler, General Sani Abacha.
